It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of William S Ponton “Bill” of Surry, Virginia on September 12th, 2025, just before his 76th birthday.
Bill was born to James and Margaret Ponton in Buchanan, Virginia on September 17th, 1949, With 6 siblings they landed in Smithfield. Bill easily put down roots as he known as “golden boy” for The Smithfield Packers football team. He married his prom queen and became a father to 3 boys. He was a highly successful employee of plumbers and pipe fitters local 110 and later retired from The Norfolk Ford Assembly plant where he created many long lasting friendships. Maturing in age, he became an active member at Smithfield Church of Christ.
Later in life, he welcomed many grandchildren into his family and loved them deeply. He was creative as much as he was athletic. A horse-shoe champion, who loved making pottery, working on house or boat projects and was meticulous at doing it these things well.
Bill had many health concerns over the years but came back stronger every time. He slowed down in his last years, but still enjoyed watching the Washington football games, seeing his grandchildren and being of service at Surry Baptist church where he was loved as a deacon.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 56 years; Phyllis Ann Ponton. Children; William “Troy” Ponton, Michael Netherland Ponton, Christopher “Brian” Ponton Grandchildren; Michael, McKenzie, Cassidy, Mason, Tower, Phyllissa, Cayden, Carter, Izabella, River, and Starla. Great-Grandchildren; Luca, Waverly, and Emma. Siblings; Judy Bell, Kenny Ponton, Jim Ponton (Andrea), Phyllis Silverman, David Ponton (Deanna), Cindy Sobelman.
Preceded in death by his father; James T Ponton, mother; Margaret S Ponton, his son; Michael Netherland Ponton, and sister; Phyllis Silverman .
A celebration of life will be held Saturday,
September 20th, 2025 at 2:00PM
