Mrs. Jean W. Banks Obituary

Jean Weir Banks, born on May 7, 1946, to the late Thomas Houston Weir and Lillie Ruth Hines W. Hardy, was whisked away suddenly by her heavenly angels on September 21, 2022.

A native of Anniston, AL, Jean enlisted in the United States Army immediately following her graduation from Calhoun County Training School in 1964.  She served in the Women’s Army Corp (WAC) at then named, Fort Eustis, VA, where she would meet and marry her husband of 36 years, CW2 (ret) Richard Banks.

Jean received her Certificate in Business Administration from the College of Hampton Roads, Newport News, VA in 1973; her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Hampton University, Hampton, VA in 1987; and was several credit hours shy of completing her Master of Science Degree in Management, also from Hampton University.  She would go on to work and retire from the Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC), Fort Monroe, VA, in 2004 as a Senior Auditor, after more than 28 years of Federal Service.  

Jean was a faithful congregant of B’Nai Avraham Messianic Fellowship; an active Associate Member of the Virginia Peninsula Virginia Chapter of Military Officers Association of America (VIPMOAA); an active Member of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association (NARFE); and a devoted attendee of the Calhoun County Training School Class of 1964 Class Reunions.

She is survived by her children:  Ingrid (David) Washington and Richard (Jessica) Banks; her grandchildren Isaiah, Jeremiah, Alannah, and Alicia Washington, foster granddaughter Francheska Sanchez Verdejo, and Aurelia Banks.

Jean is also survived by her siblings:  Glenda (Johnny) May of Royce City, TX; Vera (William) Bell of New Madrid, MO; Hines Ware of Jacksonville, AL; Velma (Nathaniel) Jenkins of Weaver, AL; Berneice Dothard of Jacksonville, FL; Arthur (Karen) Hardy of Stone Mountain, GA; and D. Frenchie Mathis of Jacksonville, FL.  Three siblings, Mary Helen Ballard, Katherine Ware, and Gregory Hardy preceded her in death.  

Additionally, Jean is survived by a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and her special goddaughter LaToya Roots.

Rabbi Michael Herts of Chosen People Ministries will officiate a Graveside Celebration of Life Service for Jean at 11 AM on Wednesday, October 12, 2022, at Hampton Memorial Gardens, 155 Butler Farm Road, Hampton, VA, where she will be laid to rest next to her husband.  

Following services, the family will receive guests at the family home from 1 P.M. to 4 P.M.
