Mrs. Josephine Johnson Obituary

Laverne Josephine Jenkins Johnson entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, July 29, 2020 at MCV in Richmond Virginia. She was born on January 8, 1945 to the late Harvey and Martha Artis Jenkins. She was also raised by her late step mother Marion Jenkins after the death of her mother Martha.

Laverne graduated from Surry County Schools and later worked as a Teacher’s Aid and at General Electric until it closed. She then went on to provide medical transportation to those in need.

In her early years Laverne was a member of St. Paul Holiness Church in Surry Virginia and later joined First Gravel Hill Baptist Church in Rushmere after marrying the love of her life William Isaac “Bubba” Johnson Jr., who predeceased her in 2015.  At Gravel Hill Baptist Church, Laverne severed as a Deaconess and sang in the choir.

Laverne had a sweet humble spirit and loved the Lord. She always had a kind encouraging word to all those whom she came in contact with. Her favorite saying was, “you have to know the Lord for yourself”.

Laverne leaves to cherish her memory, son Gregory H. Johnson and his wife Carla. Three grandchildren, Gregory D. Johnson of Norfolk, VA, Keira D. Jarrett of Waldorf MD, and Courtney D. Johnson of Charlotte NC; three great-grand children Lyric, Tristan and Aniyah; sisters Elaine Moore of Waverly, VA, Castine Johnson of Hampton, VA and brother Tony Jenkins of Prince George, VA. Brothers-in-law Elmore Johnson (Brenda), Glen Johnson (Mary) and Benjamin Johnson; sister-in-law Marvene Ponds and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
