If you were fortunate to have met Mary E. Brooks,
You knew one thing for sure: She was a force of goodwill. Anytime, anything, anywhere, she’d have your back, front, and sides covered. All you had to do was mention something you needed. Did you need clothes? She delivered. Furniture? She delivered. Food, comfort, friendship, encouragement, unconditional love? She delivered. There are no words that could encompass even one iota of her truly giving and loving spirit.
It should come as no surprise to anyone who knew her that as I sorted through her belongings I came across a remembrance written in her own hand and in her own words. Even now, even in her passing, the moment I needed her most, She delivered.
“I was born in Isle of Wight County and educated in the Surry county Public School system. I graduated from Luther P. Jackson High School in 1961.
I joined Cypress Baptist Church at an early age, sang on the choir, attended Sunday School and BTU.
I moved to Philadelphia Pennsylvania and joined White Rock Baptist Church in 1962 under the leadership of Reverend Dr. William J. Shaw. I sang on the church choir and was a member of the Young Adult Auxiliary Ministry for over 25 years.
I graduated from the Berean Institute in Philadelphia with a certification in secretarial and business skills. I attended the West Philadelphia High School evening classes for sewing and millinery to expand my seamstress expertise.
I was employed by the Philco-Ford company, Food Service Division of Philadelphia Public Schools, and Lionel Kiddie City.
After retirement from the school system I relocated to Hampton Virginia and became a member of Little Zion Baptist Church, where I served on the choir, New Members Fellowship Ministry and the Maggie K. Jones missionary board.
I was the primary caretaker for both of my late parents, Wilton H. Newby and Esther V. Newby.
I was married to the late Thomas E. Brooks for 49 & 1/2 years until his passing in 2015. We were blessed with a daughter Danielle (Ronald), a son Shawn and two beautiful grandchildren Ming and Miles McLendon. I have two brothers, the late Wilton Creighton (deceased 2023) and Edward Newby.
My hobbies are cooking, making holiday fruit cakes, arts & crafts, sewing, quilting and reading.” Mary Elizabeth Brooks (Sis)
