Mrs. Ruth Shears Obituary

Mrs. Ruth L. Shears, 83, peacefully transitioned from this life on Fri., Oct. 22, 2021, at the University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center, La Plata, MD. She was a native of Surry County, VA. She recently relocated to the Maryland area. She was the daughter of the late Luther and Luetenia Thomas. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raynard Shears, Sr., her brothers, Winfield Thomas, Raymond Thomas, Horace Thomas and John Thomas, and her sister, Rosa Thomas.

She was a founding member of the True Apostolic Church, Dendron, VA. She served as a missionary and the church’s secretary. She later became a member of the Rose of Sharon Apostolic Church, Waverly, VA. She and her husband often opened their home to welcome and care for extended family members.

She was employed for 27 years by the Surry County Public School as an instructional aide. She completed and received her instructional aide’s degree from John Tyler Community College. She enjoyed working with students and designing classroom bulletin boards. After retirement, she enjoyed spending time with family, gardening and doing home beautification projects. She actively participated in the Surry Parks and Recreation Community Center’s senior activities and designed seasonal bulletin boards.

She leaves to cherish her memory her daughters, Beverly Shears and Sonya Shears, her son, Raynard Shears, Jr. (Roxanne) and her grandsons, Osaze Shears, E. Chaise Mangrum and Zion Shears. She is survived by her brother, Theodoa Thomas, her sisters, Helen Thomas and Mildred Crawford, her brothers-in-law, Elder Lawrence Jones and Joshua Shears (Rosa), her sister-in-law, Marie Young, and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

A public viewing will be held at Poole’s Funeral Home, Smithfield, VA on Sat., Oct. 30, 2021, at 10:00 am – 12:00 pm. She will be eulogized with a graveside service at Booker T. Washington Memorial Cemetery, Wakefield, VA on Sat., Oct. 30, 2021, at 1:00 pm. Bishop Tyrone Harper, Sr., Rose of Sharon Apostolic Church, will officiate.
