Mrs. Shirley Ann Myers Obituary

Shirley Ann Myers, 87, passed away peacefully on September 13, 2024, in Dunn Loring, VA surrounded by the love of her family.

She was born February 7, 1937, in Carrollton, VA, to Gladys Magnolia Glover and Charles Cornelius Glover Sr. Her grandmother, Henrietta Bailey Brown, whom she affectionally referred to as Mama, helped to raise her until she relocated to Englewood, NJ to complete her high school education.

Shirley’s journey led her to New York City where she pursued her passion for nursing at Bellevue School of Nursing, graduating in 1959. She married Benjamin Myers (d. 2020) on July 9, 1960, and together they raised three beautiful daughters. Shirley’s dedication to her education was unwavering; she earned a bachelor’s degree in health education from York College in 1979.

A compassionate and skilled nurse, Shirley’s career spanned various healthcare settings, including prisons, schools, and ultimately as a Nursing Administrator at Creedmoor Psychiatric Hospital in Queens, NY. Known for her kindness and empathy, she touched many lives throughout her career. She retired in 1992, eager to embrace her role as a grandmother and to explore the world.

Shirley was an active member of Greater Allen A.M.E. Cathedral of New York, serving as secretary of the church’s investment group and in her later years, was a vibrant and cherished member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Senior Center. Her love for travel took her to destinations such as Malaysia, Hawaii, and Egypt, and she cherished learning about new cultures. An avid reader, painter, and cruciverbalist, Shirley enjoyed indulging her sweet tooth while balancing it with her favorite pastime of walking.

Shirley was known for her warm smile, sense of humor, and an infectious laugh that remained with her until the end. She is preceded in death by her former husband Benjamin Myers Jr., brother Elliot Sisco, and sister Mildred Holloway. She is survived by her daughters, Cheryl Myers of Queens, NY, Benita Myers of Knightdale, NC, and Menetta Myers of Falls Church, VA; grandchildren Sheranae (Stephen) Stoddard, Kiel Garnett, and Makila Myers; and great-grandchildren Sir, Pharaoh, Gabriel, Khaleesi, and Keilani. She also leaves behind her sister Willie Mae Crocker of Youngsville, NC, brother Charles Glover Jr. of Bowie, MD, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Shirley’s legacy of love, compassion, and zest for life will be remembered by all who knew her.
