Rev. Dennis Edward Harrison Obituary

Unwavering Love and affection

Please join us in celebrating the life of the patriarch of our family, Rev. Dennis Edward (Eddie) Harrison.  Rev. Harrison entered eternal rest and peace, Sunday morning, March 6, 2022 at 7:55 a.m. at MCV Hospital, Richmond, Va.

Rev. Dennis Edward Harrison was born on January 26, 1948, to the late Mary S. Spratley and Dennis L. Harrison in Spring Grove, VA.

Rev. Harrison, a lifelong member of Surry County, received his formal education in the Surry County Public Schools, graduating in 1966. He furthered his education at Paul D. Camp Community College.  After graduation, Rev. Harrison worked at the Newport News Ship Building as a Pipe Fitter and was later employed with Allied Chemical Plant as a Supervisor. After 30 years of employment, he retired and continued assisting Dennis C. (Dude) with D Harrison Hauling until his kidney transplant in 2021.

Rev. Harrison accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Lebanon Baptist Church in Surry, VA.  In an interview, Rev. Harrison stated, at 7 years old, he joined Lebanon Baptist Church for the specific reason of singing in the choir. He has always loved singing and listening to a plethora of different gospel artists. While at Lebanon, he has sung in several choirs, served as Sunday School Superintendent, Bible Study Teacher, President of the Pastor’s Aide and Chairman of the Deacon Ministry.  Rev. Harrison served as a deacon at Lebanon for approximately twenty-three years before accepting his call into ministry.   He became licensed to preach on September 27, 2009 and was ordained on January 8, 2012.  Above all else, Rev. Harrison has always put God first.  He was always a willing participant in serving the Lord. He lived by his favorite scripture; 2 Timothy 2:15  Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.

Rev. Harrison personified loving out loud and was very intentional in his words and deeds.  He was a hard worker and the ultimate provider.  Everyone that spoke of Rev. Harrison would say, “HE IS A GOOD MAN”.  He indeed was a good man, devoted to his church family, spending time with loved ones and vacationing.

Rev. Harrison was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Barbara B. Harrison, his parents Dennis L. Harrison and Mary S. Harrison.  He leaves to cherish his memory: two devoted children, Cassandra H. Miller (Terrance) and Dennis C. Harrison, Jennifer; five grandchildren, Dennis L. Harrison, Ryan Harrison, Caitlin Miller, Carly Miller and Chase Miller; four loving sisters, Barbara Mallory, Vera Greene, Wanda Shackleford, Regina Hill (Robert); one devoted sister-in-law Virginia Gary (James); and a true best friend, Pastor Adams.  He was also viewed as a second father to Tracey Sapp, Patrice Hilton, and James Gary Jr., two devoted godchildren, Courtne Sherow and Nolyn Whitaker and a host of other relatives and friends.

Recently, Rev. Harrison started singing in a group with Johnnie Johns and Rev. Ivan Pretlow. One song titled, “I’ll Be All Right” gave him a sense of peace. After his wife’s passing, that particular song let him know he would be all right.

While the singing voice of our beloved patriarch is quiet now and will be missed forever, your life was a blessing, and your memory a true treasure.  You are loved beyond words and missed beyond measure. Until we meet again……

A Homegoing Celebration will be held 1:00 pm Friday, March 18, 2022 at Lebanon Baptist Church 162 Lebanon Road, Surry Va.  Internment will be in Wierneck Cemetery. Viewing and Visitation 5-7pm Thursday, at Lebanon Baptist Church.
