Thomas S. Hardy, 91, of Surry County passed away peacefully at home on Friday, July 23, 2021. He was born on July 11, 1930 to the late Walter and Rebecca Bradby Hardy. Born and raised in Surry County, he was a graduate of the Isle of Wight Training School and Norfolk Naval Shipyard Apprentice School. Thomas was a Korean War Veteran and retired from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in 1985 after 35 years of service. A Civil Rights Crusader for Surry County, he was also a member of the Surry Assembly, Surry County Planning Commission, Crater District Planning Commission, Surry County Electoral Board, and the Surry Highway Transportation and Safety Commission for many years. In addition, he served as Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Surry Family Health Group and Vice Chairman of the Virginia Power Customer Advisory Board (Eastern Division). He was an active member of the Surry Democratic Party, NAACP and Distinguished Men’s Club of Surry County. Thomas was a faithful and dedicated member of First Gravel Hill Baptist Church in Smithfield, VA.
Left to cherish his memories are his loving wife of 65 years, Gladys Winfield Hardy; daughters, Debra Hardy-Cartwright (Allen), Faye Hardy-Lucas (Elliott) and Tonya Hardy; 3 granddaughters, D. Kaye Cartwright, Carmen Lucas and Lillian Cartwright; 2 sisters, Sarah Jean Walden and Florease Minnis (Ralph); a sister-in-law, Naydean Winfield and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, July 31, 2021 at 11 a.m. at First Gravel Hill Baptist Church, 5230 Old Stage Highway, Smithfield, VA. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the church on Friday, July 30, 2021. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to First Gravel Hill Baptist Church Young Adult Ministry (Y.A.M) at 5230 Old Stage Highway, Smithfield, VA 23430.
