William Pernell “Mack” Evans 
July 23, 1962 - July 13, 2026

William was the son of Mack Washington Evans and Leanna Langhorne Evans.  In addition to his parents, preceding him in death are his brother, Bernard and his sister, Linda. 

William was a life long resident of Surry, Virginia.  He graduated from Surry High School were he played football and basketball.  His love of football continued well past his high school days. During many Surry home football games, he could often be found coaching from the sidelines as if he was the real head coach. 

His love of football was evident in his passion for his beloved New York Giants.  He was a true fan and not just during a winning season. Every year, he would make a wager with his brother, who’s team was in the same division, to see which team was the best and earn bragging rights for the remainder of the season until the next one started. 

He was an avid gardener. He had not just a green thumb but a green hand. He planted a garden every year full of vegetables that thrived beyond expectations. He was quick to share his crops with his family and friends and give some to anyone that asked. 

William was a real artist and was extremely talented. He preferred drawing but was talented in many different mediums. His work can be found in several areas in Surry.  One of his proudest projects was designing the logo on the corner fence posts of Bacon’s Castle.  You can see his design as you pass Bacon’s Castle on Highway 10.  

William never met a stranger. He always had a big smile and laugh that was infectious. He had a quick wit and often keep those around him laughing at his comebacks. 

Those left to cherish William’s memory include Joyce Newby, his lifelong companion; his brothers James (Charmell) Evans, Mack Evans Junior, Howard (Sharon) Evans and John (Julie) Evans; his Aunts Maria Evans and Sarah Sasso; and a host of nephews, nieces, and cousins.  

A celebration of William’s life will be held on Saturday, July 25, 2026 at Poole’s Funeral Home in Surry, Virginia. The services will commence at 11:00am.  Following the service, family and friends will gather in Evanstown to celebrate his memory.
